Prof. Dr. Rodrigo Martins

Rodrigo Martins is full Professor at New University of Lisbon, the Head of Materials Science Department of New University of Lisbon and Director of the Centre of Excellence in Microelectronics and Optoelectronics Processes of the Institute of New Technologies since 1991.

He took his M.Sc. degree at University of Dundee (1977) working in the field of amorphous silicon; his Ph.D. degree in semiconductor materials from new University of Lisbon (1982) and the aggregation in Microelectronics in the same University in 1985.

He did pioneering work in the field of amorphous silicon and he is co-author of first full oxide based thin film transistor full processed at room temperature and co-inventor of the paper transistor, memory transistor and of the first solid state electrochromic transistor full oxide based. Rodrigo Martins has been also acting as consultant of several companies such as Samsung and holds 68 patents in the areas of oxides and paper electronics.

He has published two books, editing 8 special journal issues, one in honor of Walter Spear and 7 as conference proceedings and more than 440 papers in scientific journals in the areas of electronics, solid-state physics and materials science, referenced in the web of knowledge. He also integrates the international advisory board of several international conferences such as the International Conference on Amorphous and Nanocrystalline Semiconductors.

Rodrigo Martins is acting as President of the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS).

Materials challenges for the future

The presentation will focus on the relevancy of advanced materials at macro and nano scale to boost industry and to answer to societal demands concerning the production of wealth products. Moreover, due to scarce on materials more and more materials by design will be the challenge of the future. Thus, as materials are and will be the core of different multi-sectorial developments, to avoid waste of resources and to bridge in a consistency way the gap between invention and market needs, not only academia and industry must be brought to collaborate together but also a structural body on materials governance at European and Commission levels should be promoted. Those key issues will be addressed during the presentation.
