Smart Personal Protective Equipments and Smart Working Environments in the context of the European Factory of the Future

The European Factory of the Future (FoF) designs competitive industrial processes where the person is at the core of the process. The new smart work places and environments are people-centered and take into account – among others – inputs such as: personal interaction between people, machinery and processes; limitations of the workforce - for example those related to the older workers; integration in process management of advanced interfaces, personal information & communication systems (e.g. Tablets, PDAs, etc) and protection devices and equipments used by operators (e.g smart Personal Protective Equipments, s-PPEs).

The innovation of s-PPEs is based on the integration of advanced textiles and information and communication technologies to enable end-users, among other capabilities: 1) on-line physiological monitoring of end-users, 2) environmental monitoring (e.g. temperature, oxygen and toxic gases concentration), 3) orchestrated communications of the i- PPEs  at body area, local area and control center levels or 4) intelligent management of information and support in decision-making.
