Dr. Marc Van Sande

After he obtained his PhD diploma in Physics at the University of Antwerp, Marc Van Sande started in 1980 in the Research department of the Semiconductor division of MHO, a predecessor company of Umicore. After a career in mainly production and product development functions, he became Vice-President of the Business Unit Electro-Optic Materials in 1994.

In 1999 Marc Van Sande joined the Executive Committee of Umicore. He is responsible for the Business Group Energy Materials and the Umicore activities in Greater China.

Besides his responsibilities at Umicore, Marc Van Sande is

- Member of the technology advisory board of GIMV (private equity and venture capital)
- Member of the FBS advisory board (business school)
- Visiting Professor at the University of Antwerp
- Member of the High Level Group of Key Enabling Technologies of the European Commission
- Chairman of the Strategic Initiative in Materials (SIM) in Belgium
- Board member of IMEC

Marc Van Sande was born on September 2, 1952. He is married and has 4 children. Besides his scientific education, he obtained a MBA-degree at the Flanders Business School (FBS) in Antwerp.

Advanced Materials in Europe – A case for action

Advanced materials are strategic for Europe to address competitiveness and societal challenges. EU is facing growing global competition in that technology field and needs to reinforce and develop its assets in order to compete. Dr Marc Van Sande, Executive Vice-President Energy Materials at Umicore, will explain and illustrate how competitiveness of advanced materials in Europe can benefit from more integration at EU level and strong attention by EU to various areas in order to bridge the “valley of death” separating research & knowledge from the market.
