10 years of progress in research and development for the European Steel industry within the RFCS ( Research Fund for Coal and Steel )

The RFCS started in 2003, succeeding to 50 years of ECSC ( the European Coal and Steel Community treaty). Over the period 2003-2010, 166 projects were carried out within  the steel sector. 47% in new and improved steelmaking techniques, 40% in RTD of steel utilization, and 13% for transverse topics such as environment and working conditions. Around 40 new projects are funded per year for a period of 3 years, with an average of 1million euros funding per project. These projects showed an intensive cooperation of steel producers , research institutions  and steel users at an European level . 9 Technical Groups, composed of European experts monitor the ongoing projects, and evaluate the final results. The main achievements are the capitalization of new scientific knowledges, technical improvements and the development of new steel applications . In most of the cases, the results are exploited at beneficiary levels, but also at the steel sector level.
